There is nothing better than receiving a handmade gift from someone.

Especially something that has been created from an old tradition.

Crochet is a wonderful art and once you have mastered it, you can make the most amazing creations.

A relaxing hobby that can be taken anywhere and it’s something that can bring the young and old together.

Gone are the days when it was something that only granny did, sitting next to Grandpa with his pipe and slippers.

It’s a growing hobby among all generations. With crochet clubs, crochet along groups, and people standing up against the stigma that wearing something handmade used to hold.

The granny square has been around for many years, and comes in all designs and sizes.

Here is a tutorial for a modern day square.

At first glance, it appears as a normal granny square.  It has a modern twist in the fact that the rows mirror each other giving a fab effect.

The instructions are easy to follow and would be great for a beginner. You can either work lots of smaller squares and join them together. Or create one large square, although the danger is, once you get started we fear you may keep going and going.

Once you have finished your squares and sewn them together or large square, you can add a border of your choice.

You can also mix and match traditional and modern squares.

The decision is yours and will make your blanket totally unique to you.

Do keep an eye on our Youtube channel as we are currently working on a rectangle blanket in this stitch.

The more advanced crocheters out there will work out how it’s done.

For those just starting out, it will be a perfect way to learn how to make a rectangle.

It certainly does save time in joining lots of squares together.
